Sports Injury Rehabilitation

At Oamaru Physio we know that a sports injury isn’t simply a “pain now” problem, it can interrupt your training, your club season, your weekend recreation, and your confidence. That’s why our Sports Injury Rehabilitation service is tailored to both the physical injury and the “return to sport/activity” goal.

Sports Injury Rehabilitation

What the process looks like

  • A comprehensive assessment, examining the injured area, your biomechanics, your sport demands, fitness level and goals.

  • Manual therapy (if needed) to reduce pain, restore range of motion and treat the injured tissue.

  • A progressively-designed exercise programme: starting with safe movement, building strength, stability and sport-specific control.

  • Monitoring and milestones: we check that you’re moving through phase-1, phase-2, phase-3 rehabilitation appropriately and safely.

  • Return-to-play / return-to-function: this involves assessing whether you’re ready to resume your sport, what loading you’ll undertake, and how to minimise re-injury risk.

Why this matters
Your body needs more than “get rid of the pain”, you need to restore movement patterns, correct compensations, develop supporting strength, and ensure you’re fit for the demands of your sport or activity. Our team have experience with athletes and high-performance (e.g., principal physiotherapist Mike Stewart’s background) which we bring into everyday rehab.

Ideal for
Weekend warriors, club players, high school athletes, or anyone injured through sport, training or active recreation who wants to get back to full movement and performance.

Back and Neck Pain Treatment

Back and neck pain can range from a mild niggle to a debilitating condition that affects your sleep, your work, your movement and your mood. In this service we specialise in helping you understand what’s going on, treating it, and making sure it doesn’t come back

Back and Neck Pain Treatment

What the process looks like

  • Detailed evaluation of your spinal posture, movement, ergonomic/work-station factors, and contributing factors (e.g., lifestyle, prior injuries).

  • Hands-on manual therapy and mobilisations to relieve painful joints or tissues, restore mobility and reduce protective muscle tension.

  • Individualised exercise therapy: designed to improve core/spinal support muscles, correct posture or movement dysfunctions, and build resilience in your spine.

  • Education and self-management: Work-station adjustments, habits to avoid, simple routines you can do at home or at work to keep progress and prevent flare-ups.

Why this matters
Back/neck pain isn’t just about “I’ve got a sore back.” If it persists or recurs, often underlying movement/strength/postural factors are at play. Addressing those means you’re less likely to keep coming back. At Oamaru Physio we have practitioners with post-graduate expertise in manipulative physiotherapy and chronic pain.

Ideal for
Office workers, people with recurring back/neck pain, those with work-station strain, manual workers, or anyone who wants not just relief today but long-term improvement.

Post-Surgery Recovery

Recovering from surgery often brings unique challenges: swelling, movement restrictions, muscle weakness, fear of re-injury, and sometimes a long road to full function. Our Post-Surgery Recovery service supports you through every phase so you regain strength, movement and confidence

Post-Surgery Recovery

What the process looks like

  • Early phase: safe movement, gentle mobilisation, managing pain/swelling, protecting the surgical site while maintaining as much function as is safe.

  • Middle phase: gradually increasing load, restoring joint motion, beginning targeted strength & stability exercises, functional movement work (e.g., getting in/out of car, stairs, lifting).

  • Later/return phase: sport/activity-specific rehab (if required), full strength and endurance training, movement retraining, and preparation to resume normal life or sport.

  • Monitoring & adjustment: we review your progress regularly, watch for signs of complication or setback, adjust the plan as you improve.

Why this matters
Surgery gives you a structural fix, physiotherapy gives you the functional fix. Without good rehab you risk reduced range, persistent weakness, altered movement patterns and a higher chance of future problems. Our team’s expertise is well suited to guiding those recovering from orthopaedic or soft-tissue surgery.

Ideal for
People who’ve had joint replacements (hip/knee/shoulder), ligament repairs (ACL/MCL), rotator cuff repairs, spinal surgery, or any operation where a structured rehab programme can optimise outcomes.

Exercise Therapy

Exercise therapy is about more than “go to gym and do some stretches”. It’s a structured, individualised programme led by physiotherapists that builds strength, flexibility, movement control, resilience and function, whether you’re recovering from injury, managing a condition or aiming to improve performance.

Exercise Therapy

What the process looks like

  • Initial assessment: movement screening, strength assessment, flexibility/mobility evaluation, functional goals discussion (what are your aims? Everyday life, sport, work?).

  • Customised exercise plan: tailored to your condition, goals, fitness level, lifestyle and environment (home, clinic, gym).

  • Supervised sessions and independent progression: we guide you initially, ensure correct technique, then empower you to continue safely on your own between visits.

  • Review and adjustment: as your strength, movement and confidence improve, we increase challenge, refine the plan, address new goals or barriers.

Why this matters
Treatment without exercise often leads to only temporary relief. Exercise therapy provides long-term change, builds capacity and helps prevent future injury or dysfunction. At our clinic we integrate exercise therapy with manual treatment and education to achieve stronger outcomes.

Ideal for
Anyone who wants to regain movement or strength after injury, someone managing a chronic musculoskeletal condition, someone aiming to enhance performance or simply keep active and healthy.

Computer Workstation Assessments

If you spend long hours at a computer and experience discomfort, pain, or want to prevent injury, our Computer Workstation Assessment service evaluates your setup to identify and correct ergonomic risks. We assess your desk, chair, monitor, keyboard, and work habits to improve your fit with your environment, increase comfort, and prevent musculoskeletal disorders.

Computer Workstatoin Assessments

What the process looks like

  • An onsite ergonomic assessment where we evaluate your workstation setup, including your desk, chair, monitor, keyboard, and mouse positioning in relation to your body and work habits.
  • Posture analysis and work habit review: We observe how you sit, type, and interact with your equipment to identify risk factors that could lead to discomfort or injury.
  • Personalized recommendations: We provide specific adjustments and modifications to your workstation setup, including equipment positioning, ergonomic accessories, and work habit improvements.
  • Follow-up support: We ensure the changes work for you, measure improvements in comfort and function, and adjust the plan to keep you pain-free and productive.
Why this matters
Poor workstation ergonomics can lead to chronic pain, repetitive strain injuries, and reduced productivity. A professional assessment identifies risks before they become problems, helping you work comfortably and efficiently. Investing in proper ergonomics prevents costly health issues and supports long-term wellbeing.
Ideal for
Office workers spending extended time at computers, remote workers setting up home offices, anyone experiencing neck, back, shoulder, or wrist discomfort, or employers wanting to reduce workplace injury risks and support employee health.

Return to work Programmes

At Oamaru Physio we know that a workplace injury isn't simply a 'pain now' problem, it can interrupt your job, your income, your daily routine, and your confidence in your ability to perform your job. That's why our Return to Work Programmes are structured to address both the physical recovery and the practical goal of safely returning to meaningful work.

Return to Work Programmes

What the process looks like:

  • A workplace assessment to understand the physical and functional demands of your role, your environment, and any specific challenges you might face.
  • Collaboration with your employer, GP, and other health professionals to ensure everyone is aligned and supporting your recovery journey.
  • Development of a detailed, gradual return-to-work plan tailored to your injury, your job requirements, and your recovery timeline, this may involve modified duties or hours as needed.
  • Ongoing monitoring and support from your physiotherapists while you transition back to full duties, with adjustments made based on your progress and any barriers that arise.
Why this matters
Your body needs more than “get rid of the pain”, you need to restore function, rebuild confidence in work tasks, address any physical barriers, and ensure you’re ready for the demands of your workplace. Our team includes Vocational and Return to Work Providers (Mike and Duncan) who bring specialised experience in workplace rehabilitation, which we apply to help you get back to work safely and effectively.
Ideal for
Workers who have sustained an injury on the job or work-related injury, anyone facing barriers to returning to their normal duties, or those who need a structured approach to transitioning back to full work capacity with ongoing support.
